"Hazel Hotel" Character Concepts
During the second iteration of this project in November of 2023, I drew a lot of character concepts in my sketchbook in case I needed to reference details about them. I found this to be really quite fun, and continued working on these designs even after scrapping the initial project.
There wasn't a point to making them - I wasn't planning on putting them in anything. But it was so much FUN!
I ended up making over 50 characters for this universe, just for the hell of it. I still regularly draw them TODAY.
Then, in January of 2025, I played the silly Roblox game Dandy's World. Their cutesy cast of characters had alternate "twisted" versions, which changed their designs into something a bit nightmarish and freaky. I loved this idea, and gave it a go on my own cast of characters.
Most of you will probably recognise Hollow Itti, but Lumo-Millie, the Poltergeist, Gallant Stitches, and many of the Southbone guys also originate from here too.
"Game Guide" Concepts
Here's the concept art I made for the "Game Guide" Project that would eventually become Hazel's Mirror.
This version of the story was a lot more wordy, and it was a lot of fun trying to cram all of it down while still making it feel coherent in the final product.
This was me figuring out the Guardian Angel's design, as well as other potentially concepts for The Lost Chapel.
Above is a mixture of pixel art drawings that would have represented the "in-game sprites" of various characters, enemies, and items. I later re-used this concept for Spell icons in the loading screens.
The Rest Of The Concept Art
Unfortunately... once I had figured out the medium, a LARGE majority of the concepts came straight from my head. I'd get really cool ideas at work, and by the time I got home to draw them the idea was basically solidified. I only drew on paper so I had a reference for when I turned them into pixel art later.
I think they're still cool to look at regardless.
The End
That's all of the concept art! If you're following in chronological order from the Hazel's Mirror Development Hub, all that's left now is the scrapped music :>
